My Bio
Rogerio Correa I am a Brazilian playwright based in London. My writing always starts from an issue I want to explore and tends to be political, diving heavily into LGBT themes. My Brazilian roots and 30 years of life in the UK give me a perspective on both cultures that feeds into my writing, which can be highly auto-biographical and also greatly influenced by magical realism. I have a versatile theatrical experience, not only as a playwright, but also as an actor, singer and producer, having started my professional life in theatre in the 80s in Brazil. As a writer, I have trained in Brazil and in the UK. From 2009 to 2012 I was the Assistant Coordinator of the Centre For Scriptwriting at CAL, the most prestigious drama school in Rio de Janeiro. I got a Distinction in my MA in Scriptwriting from Goldsmiths (2013). In 2012, my first play - The Spinning House - was staged in Brazil, having been selected in Banco do Brasil Urgent Drama Competition. This play was also performed in St Albans at the Maltings Theatre, by the company Irresponsible Decorators in 2015. My play Na Real was shortlisted for the most prestigious playwriting competition in Brazil (Seleção Brasil em Cena 7ª Edição, in 2015). My play Mona & I was staged at the Cervantes Theatre, in London, in July 2017, as part of the CLAW - Contemporary Latin American Writers - Festival, which I have also co-curated. Mona & I was also the runner-up in the category of Best Comedy by the writing group Players Playwrights (the oldest playwrights group in the UK), in London in 2017. My play Sexo Entre Homens no Século XXi was shortlisted for the most prestigious playwriting competition in Brazil (Seleção Brasil em Cena 8ª Edição, in 2018). I had many short plays staged in scratch nights in the UK . In 2014 I curated and produced the event Red Like Embers - Contemporary Voices from Brazil, with Theatre503, staging 10 short plays by Brazilian playwrights. My play Connected was staged as part of the show. This event brought together most Brazilian theatre artists working in London for, I believe, the first time. I co-curated and co-produced the show Brazil Diversity at Theatre503 in June 2018, bringing together the Brazilian theatre community in London and in Brazil once more and staging 8 LGBT-themed short plays. My play Homo Phobia was one of the plays in the show. My play O Beijo Proibido was performed by drama students at Casa das Artes de Laranjeiras in Brazil. In 2019 I have curated the Rapid Writer Response/Cuzco scratch night for Theatre503, I have had my short play Sexual Assault performed at the 50/50 Scratch Night at the Pleasance Theatre (London – 2019) Also in 2019 my play Sex Between Men in the 21st Century was performed at Theatre503, London.
