My play "The Spinning House has been long listed for the 2017 Papatango New Writing Prize:
"Hi,
Thank you so much for this submission to the 2017 Papatango New Writing Prize. We are hugely grateful to you; that you have the courage to share your story with us is a privilege we really appreciate. We are committed to writing individually to everyone, despite the huge number of entries - 1036 this year! We have been sending general updates throughout the process to all entrants, which we hope you have received, and now we can write to you personally.
We are pleased to say that your play was longlisted. Feedback from readers was:
This nicely captures the blurred and confused world of dementia; the constant shifting and altering of characters mimics Adelia's mental state. There are some lovely tender moments between Mario & Fantusi, and an effective use of the avatar to show the differences between reality & persona. Teresa is slightly underdeveloped compared to the other two generations, and the two main plot strands feel quite separate. However it is a well observed and sympathetic look at family relationships, and loneliness down the generations.
We hope this feedback is useful. Of course, notes are never definitive; we hope these are stimulating and encouraging as feedback from genuine readers, but writers know their own work better than anyone else, so please don't feel any obligation to follow up on these if you disagree. Unfortunately we cannot enter into further discussion, given the sheer number of scripts we are responding to, but we hope this is helpful.
We recently revealed that the winner of the Prize is Trestle by Stewart Pringle. The world premiere will be at Southwark Playhouse from 1 - 25 November. We really hope you can attend a performance and say hello to us in person; as a thank you for entering we have set up an exclusive discount code for writers, PAPAWRITERS, which offers tickets for only £12 for all shows between 1 - 11 November. http://southwarkplayhouse.co.uk/show/trestle
Thanks once again for entering. Please do continue to engage with Papatango, whether by sending us scripts, joining our free writing workshops, or inviting us to see work in progress. You can find out more about our programme of free workshops and bursaries here: www.papatango.co.uk. In the meantime, all the best with your writing!
Best wishes,
